Writing non-fiction for kids: SCBWI central Iowa network event

If you've ever thought, "Hey, I should write an article about that," then come to the Ames Public Library on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 10 a.m. to talk with two central Iowa writers who will give us the scoop on writing non-fiction for kids. This is a free event and the more the merrier.

Diane Nelson of Ames, a writer for Iowa State University Extension, has published several articles for kids. She likes working from magazines' theme lists and recently sold some articles about chocolate to Appleseeds magazine, part of the Carus magazine group.

Cindy Blobaum, a freelance writer from Des Moines and SCBWI network chair, is the author of Geology Rocks!: 50 Hands-On Activities to Explore the Earth and Insectigations: 40 Hands-On Activities to Explore the Insect World, which was published this year. You may have seen Cindy's article in the SCBWI Bulletin a couple of years ago about research. Cindy also publishes articles for kids like "The Scoop on Poop" for WeeOnes magazine. The title of that one sucked me in.

Afterward, we'll head downtown for lunch with our guest speakers. Come join us!

The Ames Public Libray is located at 515 Douglas Ave. There's a metered parking lot at the corner of Douglas and 6th St. as well as street parking. To get to the library from Hwy 30, take the Duff Ave exit north to 6th St. (there's a stoplight). Go left (west) on 6th St. one block. The library is on the southwest corner of Douglas and 6th. The parking lot is on the northwest corner. We'll be meeting in the Founders Suite on the second floor.
